    Forward port of the bug fix to the 1.4 branch reguarding the C++
    compile error.
Solution:
    Need to put

        #ifdef __cplusplus
        extern "C" {
        #endif

            /* ... */

        #ifdef __cplusplus
        }
        #endif

    around function declarations.
