[svn-r17972] Description:
Bring r17971 from trunk to 1.8 branch:
Allow the core VFD to properly support opening backing store files through
symbolic links and have the external links in the file be treated in the same
way as for the sec2 driver.
Tested on:
FreeBSD/32 6.3 (duty) in debug mode
