[svn-r22628] Description:
    Bring r22627 from trunk to 1.8 branch:

    Merge some of the changes on the plist_encode_decode branch back to the
trunk.

Tested on:
    Mac OSX/64 10.7.4 (amazon) w/debug
    (Too minor to require h5committest)
