[svn-r21103] Modified test code to work around a pgcc optimizer bug encountered
on Koala.  

Tested on: Koala -- PGI -- debug and production
	   Jam -- gcc, intel, PGI -- debug and production -- with and without AIO
	   Phoenix -- gcc -- debug and production, with and without AIO.
